Norton Commando Fouling Plugs

Are these plugs really any more resistant to fuel fouling than your ordinary run of the mill Champion N 3's & 4's?? Allegedly they last longer, but that doesn't come into my equation.

I'm running a 4 y.o Boyer Mk 2 in the 66 Bonnie & from time to time I still foul the N 3 or N 4 plug even with good plug readings. As discussed in other threads here & elsewhere, once fouled they stay fouled. Reason being is stated that the makers no longer coat the insulators with glazing as modern EFI vehicles don't need fouling protection any more. Years ago you could clear a fouled plug with an Italian tuneup You geezers know what that is don't you But you can't now. Foul = fling.

Do the makers glaze iridium plug insulators or not? If not then they really shouldn't be any better than N 3's etc.? Reason I'm asking is that I read good things about Iridiums but where I live they want $A23.50 each Don't want to hock my watch yet until I get the green light from you blokes (or not). Hi, I've worked with iridium plugs at work to some degree. I don't see any difference in fouling one way or the other.

Normally the Mercedes I work on use platinum plugs, solely for increased plug life which is 60-100000 thousand miles. The US government mandated longer service intervals so many cars went to platinum to get the electrode wear resistance needed to go the miles. Some clients prefer iridium so they bring those if for us to install. The idea being iridium is harder & has more corrosion resistance so longer lasting. Manufacturers claim less fouling, but that really is due to less wear compared to regular or platinum plugs.

In real life we find on the most high performance motors AMG63 some plugs will not go the full 60k & get random misfires. Visually the plug looks ok compared to others. We have not been able to determine what is the cause of the break down. I haven't put iridium in these motors & seen them run the distance so I don't know.

I've only put iridium in normal v6 & v8 which platinum work perfect anyway. For our bikes, I can't see they would foul less in any way. I real life our cars with regular plugs they would go 30k miles easy with unleaded fuel.

From my observations over 45 years in the trade lead in the fuel was the #1 killer of spark plugs, followed by oil fouling from excessive consumption. Knowing all this I've been following my plug wear using 91oct unleaded. The plugs show little to no wear after 2-3k miles & I burn no oil so they stay very clean. I run stock points & coils on my bike.

The codes used by the various manufacturers give some information about the plug types. The first digit represents the thread size, followed by a number which reflects the heat range of the plug.

The Champion and NGK plugs match well in this respect, but do not necessarily match well with others. This is because some have wider heat ranges and one plug may cover two from another manufacturer.

Anti Fouling Plugs

As a rule of thumb, for NGK and Denso, a higher number means a colder plug whereas for Champion, a higher number means a hotter plug. The next letter describes the reach of the plug, except in the case of Champion where the first letter describes not only the thread but also the reach. Any other letters cover special features or materials used or if the plug is for competition use. A 'P' in the NGK range, a 'Y' in the Champion, or a 'D' in the Bosch range means that the plug is a projected electrode type.
