Reposted here after Printers and Printing. I am trying to advise someone on buying a scanner for his library of slides and negatives. I have done some searching, so as to be up-to-date, and came across the Rollei DF-S 290HD and PDF-S 300 Pro scanners.

These have scanning times supposedly around a second, even if only 9MPx. Has anyone any experience of either of these beasties. Whilst I am at it, I note we do not have a scanner forum, and Printers and Printing are actually the opposite end of the workflow!! Who can I ask about getting a forum for Scanners and a review of some of the various possibilities? There are many alternatives, and some techy stuff here would be very handy.

I use a DigitDia 5000, which is fine, but does not scan in seconds!! Surely scanners have some input to DigitalPhotography? Fmian and Bob, I was hoping for a reply which would illuminate on whether these Rollei scanners were what they claim to be. You will both realise that 1 sec for a scan is pretty much out of this world, so I want to know if the claim holds up, and if there is some other downside which only using the thing shows up. Bob - I now have to look at the ION scanner, and whether it is available in France! I really think there should be a scanner forum, so the comparitive performance of the various offerings could be considered.

Anything I say is meant to be interesting or funny, but never offensive! SeptimusFry wrote: fmian and Bob, I was hoping for a reply which would illuminate on whether these Rollei scanners were what they claim to be.

You will both realise that 1 sec for a scan is pretty much out of this world, so I want to know if the claim holds up, and if there is some other downside which only using the thing shows up. There are several 'scanners' now which provide near instant scans as they are just elementary cameras. They take a single image with an 'area' sensor rather than the scanners which use a line sensor slowly progressing along the material to be scanned. Bob - I now have to look at the ION scanner, and whether it is available in France!

I have bought an ION 'scanner' and the claimed resolution was twice that of the sensor and should have been described as 'interpolated' resolution - but WASN'T. It was fast but gave VERY disappointing results. Also, since it was a conventional digital sensor, it had a poor dynamic range, mine had NO method to alter exposure from what its auto control provided and was useless for the DR of a transparency.

The Rollei is much further up the price point and MAY have exposure control and one of them has the ability to re-photograph prints up to 10cm x 15cm see:- I really think there should be a scanner forum, so the comparitive performance of the various offerings could be considered. I most humbly and grovellingly beg your forgiveness for not having tested your proposed scanners for you before you posed the question but, lets say, I have been resting on my laurels (glutious maxima) for the last decade. I have sharpened the screw on my heaviest tripod and propose throwing myself onto it as soon as I have posted this reply in true traditional fashion. (It only hurts the first time.) I have found many other web sites with multiple scanner comparisons over the years but I think scanner sales and prices have declined since then as the digitising of films/slides has either substantially been done or a larger percentage of digital photographers have never been involved with film. I quote from a poster's signature (yours), a line I should have on mine, too:- 'Anything I say is meant to be interesting or funny, but never offensive!'

Cheers, Tony. The ION scanners are rubbish. We sell similar ones made by GLANZ at work and they are just a 5MP camera pointed at your backlit slide/negative. Often the film will not be evenly illuminated causing hot spots on the final result.

The Plustek Model I was talking about is here for less than 200 pounds. Scanning at 7200dpi takes a few minutes, but if you want to do it quick you'll have to sacrifice scan quality. Just put the DPI down. Here is a sample.

The first is the entire frame resized to 10% of the original. The second is a 100% crop from the full size. This is on ISO3200 film so the grain is quite pronounced, but it is sharp at 100%, unlike the results that interpolation gives you.
